Overcoming Overwhelm – Vision to Plan

strategies for accountants Mar 27, 2023

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of things you have to do every day? Don't worry, you're not alone! Many business owners and entrepreneurs feel overwhelmed every day, and this can lead to stress, analysis paralysis, and a total lack of control.

But where does overwhelm really come from? The answer is a lack of clarity.

When we're unclear about what we need to be doing and we have all these ideas popping into our brains, we simply can't do everything, and that leads to a massive sense of overwhelm. We need to get some clarity about what's really important so that we can prioritise what needs doing.

So, the starting point is to create a vision or a picture of what you want your business and personal life to look like. What does the perfect life look like to you? When you have clarity about your vision, you can move on to creating a plan.

In this blog post, we'll look at the Vision to Plan process and how it can help you overcome overwhelm.

From Vision to Plan

The Vision to Plan process is a great way to get clarity about what's important in your personal life and your business. It involves the following steps:

Vision

The starting point for avoiding overwhelm is to create a vision of what you want your business to look like, and what you want your personal life to look like. Think about it carefully and write it down so you have a physical copy.

What does the perfect life look like to you? What will make your life great? What do you want your business to look like when it's finally done? What sort of size is your business going to be? When do you want to exit the business?

It’s crucial that you have a clear image of what your end goal looks like so that you can plan how to get there.

Goals

Next, you'll need to break your vision down into smaller, more manageable goals. These goals should be specific, measurable, and achievable. Your vision drives your goals.

I recommend you split your goals into three timeframes: long-term goals, medium-term goals, and short-term goals. Long-term goals should be typically a 10-year timeframe, medium goals 3-5 years, and short-term within the next 12 months.

To create your goals, I like to work backwards. Your vision is your endpoint, so work backwards from there.

Strategy

Now, your goals then drive your strategy. With your goals in mind, create a strategy for achieving them. What steps do you need to take to achieve your goals and make your vision a reality?

So, once you’ve figured out where you want to be a year from now, the next thing you need to figure out is what you need to do to get there.

Break your strategies down into quarters – what do you need to do in the first quarter of the year? The second? Etc. Figure out what projects you need to focus on and when to meet your goals.

Next Steps

By following this Vision to Plan process, you'll have a clear roadmap for what you want to achieve and how you're going to get there. This clarity will help you avoid overwhelm by allowing you to focus on what's truly important.

Once you have a plan in place, it's important to regularly review and revise it. Things change, and your plan should change with them. But by having a plan, you'll be able to make decisions more easily and avoid the stress that comes with feeling overwhelmed.

In the next blog post, we'll look at 10 strategies and tactics that you can use to help you avoid overwhelm in your day-to-day life. But remember, the starting point is always clarity. When you know what's truly important, everything else falls into place.
